Transitioning into Autumn with Ayurveda

As temperatures begin to fall and nature makes its transition to shorter days and longer nights, it is an excellent time to cleanse, renew, and align with nature’s rhythms–not only physically, but also mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The ancient art of Ayurvedic cleansing, known as panchakarma, is an effective, time-tested process of cleansing and renewal on all of these levels.

We, as biological organisms, evolved within the natural world. We may spend much of our daily lives inside buildings and cars and removed from the natural light and temperature of our environment, but we are still greatly affected by it. The natural world around us is constantly changing in an endless cycle of birth, fruition, decay, death and rebirth. This is most obvious in the cycle of the seasons.

The wisdom of the natural world is awe-inspiring to watch. How do the squirrels know to collect and save food? How do they know that what is in abundance at the moment will be scarce in the coming months? How do the trees and plants know to draw their energy inward to conserve it?

We are part of the natural world, not separate from it, and we also have this inner wisdom. If we listen to our natural urges we can see how our feelings and behaviors mirror those of the plants and animals around us.

Autumn weather brings dry cold winds that can be invigorating but also agitating to our systems. We may become anxious, alternately hyper and lethargic, feeling an internal drive to scurry around in preparation as the squirrels and chipmunks do. We know that when Winter comes we will want to cuddle down into our cozy places and drink tea by the fire.

So how do we get from here to there with as much ease and grace as possible?

This change from Summer to Autumn is the perfect time to take a week to slow ourselves down, to eat foods, herbs and teas that are nurturing, nourishing, grounding and warming. To take loving care of ourselves with self-care practices and rituals, to move our bodies in conscious, gentle and relaxed ways.  When we intentionally disrupt our daily routines and create time and internal space for self-reflections we get a clearer perspective on our lives and how we are choosing to live them.

Doing an Ayurvedic cleanse is nurturing on all levels and can help prepare your emotionally, mentally and physically for the stress and high activity of the holiday season and the cold dark Winter.

You can join me for an Ayurvedic Fall Cleanse Workshop this Sat. Sept. 29th 1:30 - 4:30pm at the EssentialZen Yoga Studio in Aurora Ohio.
